Student Union (Pupil Council)

At Biggar High School our Student Union (Pupil Council) is a representative structure for pupils only, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of our School and its pupils.  Our Student Union works with a designated teacher and our school captains, who act as links between the pupils, staff and management in the school.

Our Student Union is made up of two elected class representatives from each year group S1-S4.  These elections take place with Personal and Social Education (PSE) classes early in the session of each new school year.  The School Captains, Vice Captains, one House Captain and one Sports Captain represent S5 and S6 students.

The designated teacher attached to the Student Union meetings facilitates the copying of Agenda and Minutes for each meeting.  On average, meetings take place monthly and the Chair and Minute taker are rotated at the meeting.

Time is given to Class Representatives to gather their own class views or to feedback from the Student Union during PSE. Student Union minutes are posted on Year Group Google Classroom noticeboards, on the website and included in our weekly Pupil and Parent/ Community newsletters .  Minutes of meetings are also distributed to all staff to promote staff awareness of current pupil issues.

As a Rights Respecting School it is important that we respect the views of all within BHS; pupils and staff are keen to strengthen this aim and see that a fully operational Student Union allows everyone to play a genuine part in the life of our school and affect/ promote/ engage in positive, meaningful change.
